The Master Gardener Program is a community service organization, designed to relay research based horticultural information to the home gardener. Cooperative Extension trains interested people to go out into the community, diagnose plant problems to assist the home horticulturist in keeping their plants healthy. Master Gardeners hold information clinics and administer school projects in the community on a volunteer basis.
To become a Master Gardener, you must participate in a 50 hour intensive training program, and take a written test on what you have learned. Before becoming a certified Master Gardener, one must serve 50 volunteer hours in Cooperative Extension approved community service within the period of one year, and engage in 12 hours of continuing education. To retain certification you must volunteer at least 25 hours a year for each year you wish to retain the certification.
Master Gardeners are available in all parts of Calaveras County to assist in gardening problems. This is a free service provided by your County and The University of California. To obtain more information on reaching a Master Gardener, or becoming a certified Master Gardener, call 754-6477.
